Active Impact Investments is a climate-focused seed-stage venture capital firm based in Vancouver, Canada. Founded in 2018, the firm is a Certified B Corporation and one of the leading early-stage climate tech investors in North America. Its mission is to support environmental sustainability through profitable investment, accelerating the growth of companies that are tackling climate change with scalable, revenue-generating solutions. With a blend of capital and operational support, Active Impact plays a hands-on role in helping founders scale companies that drive measurable environmental impact.
Active Impact invests in early-stage climate tech startups across Canada and the United States, with a strong bias toward companies with early traction - typically between $200K and $3M in revenue - and significant market potential.
The firm targets sectors such as clean energy, smart buildings, waste reduction, sustainable agriculture, water, mobility, and carbon management.
Active Impact looks for companies that align with its mission-driven values, offering both financial returns and environmental progress. Its investment approach is grounded in a belief that business and impact can - and should - coexist.
In May 2025, Active Impact Investments announced the close of its third fund, ClimateTech Fund III, with CAD $110 million in committed capital, bringing its total assets under management to over CAD $180 million.
The fund was co-anchored by Northleaf Capital Partners through its Canadian venture capital strategy and Fondaction, and also received support from Boann, the Co-operators Corporate Venture Capital Fund, Deloitte Ventures, InBC, and Annalee Bloomfield, the founder of Sustain.Life - a portfolio company from Fund II.
Fund III will support approximately 25 startups, with plans to add 18 more to the seven already backed. Initial investments include Canadian companies Jetson, Skyward, RIPTK, and ThinkLabs AI, as well as U.S.-based companies C.Scale, Lumo, and Zeno.
The fund is focused on high-potential climate tech ventures that can demonstrate early customer validation and significant scalability, primarily in Canada with strategic exposure to the U.S. The fund continues the firm's strategy of pairing capital with operational guidance to help companies accelerate growth and impact.
Leadership
Active Impact is led by Founder and Managing Partner Mike Winterfield and General Partner Tom Boddez. The team combines operational experience with a deep commitment to environmental outcomes. As a Certified B Corp, the firm integrates ESG principles into its investment process and firm culture.
Active Impact also offers active portfolio support through a network of advisors and operators who assist with talent acquisition, go-to-market strategies, and scaling challenges. Their Fund I and II are top-decile performers in DPI (distributions to paid-in capital) for their vintage years according to data from Carta, reflecting both strong returns and consistent exits.
Notable Investments
Current Fund III investments include Jetson, a Canadian EV infrastructure company; Skyward, a provider of emissions tracking software; RIPTK, a climate risk data platform; ThinkLabs AI, which focuses on AI for energy optimization; and U.S.-based ventures C.Scale, Lumo (water efficiency), and Zeno (carbon measurement).
These investments reflect the fund’s diversified climate tech thesis and preference for real-world applications with strong market validation.
Notable Exits
Active Impact has exited seven companies through acquisition, including three exits in 2024 alone. These exits validate the firm’s ability to identify early-stage climate leaders and support them through to successful outcomes.
Though specific acquisitions have not been publicly disclosed, the firm’s track record is benchmarked in the top decile for DPI among climate seed funds.
