Captain Ventures is a seed-stage venture capital firm founded by Tyler Hogge, operating between Salt Lake City and San Francisco. The firm is built on the belief that the founder, the Captain, is the primary determinant of a startup's success, and it never leads rounds, investing exclusively as non-competitive, co-investment capital alongside other VCs.
Captain Ventures is sector-agnostic, backing seed-stage founders across industries rather than focusing on specific verticals.
The firm positions itself as a non-competitive partner, writing checks alongside lead investors rather than competing with them for allocation or board seats.
Captain Ventures closed its debut vehicle, Fund I, at approximately $33 million, above its $30 million target, through a single rolling close completed in roughly 100 days in September 2026.
The fund plans to back 25 to 30 companies with an average check size of about $750,000, ranging both smaller and larger depending on the opportunity.
Limited partners include founders, investors, other funds, and successful families assembled through more than 100 LP conversations; Tyler Hogge is among the fund's largest individual LPs.
