Gaorong Capital

About

Gaorong Capital (formerly Banyan Capital) is a Beijing-based venture capital firm founded in 2014 by Zhang Zhen, Gao Xiang, and Yue Bin, all former IDG Capital investors. The firm backs technology, consumer, healthcare, and industrial companies across Greater China, with additional presence in Southeast Asia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Gaorong manages more than $4 billion in assets across roughly 300 portfolio companies.

Investment Focus

Gaorong Capital invests across new technology (AI, robotics, semiconductors, autonomous driving), internet and new consumption, and healthcare, backing companies from seed through growth stage with particular strength at Series A and Series B.

The firm takes a top-down, trend-driven approach, aiming to build long-term industry relationships and back entrepreneurs identifying durable shifts rather than short-term momentum.

Fund

Gaorong Capital recently registered the Tianjin Gaorong Changying Fund, a $486 million vehicle targeting domestic emerging industries through direct and indirect equity investment.

The fund's limited partners are drawn largely from industrial and corporate capital rather than traditional institutional investors: Junzheng Group and a subsidiary committed $149.2 million (more than 30% of subscribed capital), Hainan Biosails Biotech committed $59.7 million, Muyuan Industrial Group committed $52.2 million, Zijin Mining's investment management arm committed $44.8 million, Jiahua Energy committed $29.8 million, and New Guodu Technology and a Yifan Pharmaceutical subsidiary each committed $14.9 million.

The fund is managed by Tibet Banyan Capital Management and has a seven-year term.

The close reflects a broader shift in China's venture market, where industrial and agricultural conglomerates are increasingly writing large checks into technology investors as traditional state-owned capital pulls back.
