Playground Global is a Palo Alto-based early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2015, focused exclusively on deep technology. The firm backs founders turning foundational advances in science and engineering into commercial, industrial, and societal impact, from new compute architectures and semiconductor materials to energy infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. With Fund IV, Playground manages over $1.2 billion across four funds. The firm's central conviction is that too much venture capital has drifted into software abstraction while underinvesting in the physical, engineered world.
Playground invests in deep technology across compute, semiconductors, energy, robotics, quantum computing, life sciences, and advanced materials. The firm's priority engineering bets include superconducting logic, new semiconductor materials and packaging, nuclear uprating and large modular reactors, high-temperature superconductors, and gallium nitride power electronics. Playground explicitly positions itself against the orbital infrastructure narrative, arguing that the solutions to compute and energy scarcity lie in better physics and engineering on Earth, not data centers in space.
Fund IV closed at $475 million in May 2026, exceeding its SEC-filed target of $350 million by $125 million. Playground previously raised $410 million for Fund III in 2022, $176 million for Fund II, and raised its first fund at launch in 2015. The firm's unicorn portfolio includes Agility Robotics, Ayar Labs, Branch Metrics, d-Matrix, NextSilicon, PsiQuantum, Skydio, Ultima Genomics, Unconventional AI, and Virta Health.
